The Beating of Deandre Harris and the Hunt for his Attackers

During the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia which took place August 11th and 12th, a counter-protester was savagely beaten by a group of  six white supremacists.  Deandre Harris, 20, and his friends joined the group of counter-protesters in Emancipation Park.  According to Harris’ personal statement on his GoFundMe Page, he was attacked in a parking lot 15 minutes after Governor Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency.  According to a Washington Post article, Harris swung a flashlight and possibly struck a white supremacist who was attempting to stab a counter-protester with the pole of a Confederate flag.  Then, the group of domestic terrorists turned on Harris. deanrewordpress

The group of white supremacists brutally kicked, punched, and hit him with metal poles, wooden sticks and a large wooden board.  Among his injuries, Harris suffered a spinal injury along with deep lacerations on his head, according to his attorney, S. Lee Merritt.

“They were beating me with poles. I have eight staples in my head, a broken wrist and a chipped tooth,” Harris said.

Some of the attack was caught on camera with all of the attackers clearly visible.  The video went viral and sparked outrage.  One would think that with a clear video of the attack, law enforcement officials would work right away to identify and arrest the attackers.

shaunkingNot exactly. In fact, it took one activist to take it upon himself to identify the attackers and ensure some sort of justice for Harris.  Shaun King, a columnist for the New York Daily News and a huge presence on Facebook and Twitter, relentlessly pursued the identities of the six men.

Thanks completely to King, two of the men were identified and finally arrested by law enforcement.  They are Daniel Borden, 18, and Alex Ramos, 33.

The other four men have yet to be identified, but King has vowed to never stop pursuing them.
